सिक्वेंस और सेट are the only two legal containers in 13 कार्ड रम्मी. If a card is not inside one of them at declaration, it is deadwood and it scores against you. This page shows both containers with Indian table examples so you can match what the rummy app highlights.

Pure vs impure at a glance

Pure = same suit, consecutive, no joker. Impure = same suit run with a joker filling one gap.

A sequence is a run in one suit: 5—6—7—A set is a rank club: 5—5—5—Mix those ideas and you get an invalid group, which is why new players should also read how to play rummy and practise in the demo.

Online rummy in India is still this same pairing. The rummy game on your phone does not invent new groups. It only checks them faster.

Pure sequence: no joker, same suit, consecutive ranks. 9—10—J—is pure. 9—Joker J—is impure. Impure sequences are allowed after you already have a pure one.

Sets: three or four cards of one rank, different suits. 7—7—7—is valid. 7—7—7—is not, because two hearts arrived from two decks. A joker may stand in for a missing suit: 7—7—Joker.

Length: sequences can be longer than three. 4—5—6—7—is still one sequence, which helps you place 13 cards without a leftover singleton. Full legality is listed in rummy rules and declaration rules.

Build the shortest possible pure sequence first, then grow it only if it absorbs a dangerous high card.

Do not force a set of aces if those aces can complete two different suit runs. Flexible cards belong in sequences.

More examples, including traps

Trap 1: 7—8—8—That is not a sequence and not a set. Beginners still group it because the 8s look friendly. Split them. Keep 7—8—and hunt 6—or 9— Throw 8—if it is isolated.

Trap 2: A—A—A—A—from two decks. Four aces with a duplicated heart is illegal as one set. You must split into a three-ace set using different suits and find another home for the extra heart ace, or discard it. The rummy app will not bless the duplicate.

Trap 3: Q—K—A—2—If the table forbids wrapping and also forbids A sitting in both ends of one run, you may have two ideas fighting. Usually Q-K-A is a valid high sequence and 2—is a leftover. Do not force A-2 into the same run as Q-K. Confirm on rummy rules.

Trap 4: using both jokers to fake a pure sequence lookalike. It is impure. You still need a different pure sequence. The demo message “You Need Better Sequence—is often this trap.

Clean example: 9—10—J—(pure), 3—3—3—(set), 6—7—Joker (impure sequence), 2—2—2—(set). Thirteen cards, legal. This is the picture you want before declaring. Compare with declaration rules.
